01 · Waterfalls
Waterfalls inside Chagres National Park
Cerro Azul has several waterfalls accessible via well-marked trails. There's a large, deep one — great for the more adventurous — and a smaller, shallow one, perfect for kids. Access is usually on foot or by 4x4 on off-road trails. We always recommend checking the weather before heading out, since rain in Chagres National Park can move in fast and rivers rise just as quickly.
02 · Lookout point
Vistamares lookout — see two oceans at once
Vistamares is one of Cerro Azul's most photographed spots. On clear days you can see both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans from the same point. It's a short distance from the cabin and absolutely worth arriving early or at sunset for the best colors.
03 · Lookout point
Atalaya lookout
Another option for panoramic views, with more direct access and spectacular views of the valley, the pines, and, in the distance, the Panama City skyline. It's one of the favorites for watching the sunset.
04 · Trail
Río Mono trail
A cloud-forest hike that ends at one of the most impressive trees in the area: a tree over 500 years old, nearly 100 feet (30 m) tall, that takes almost 8 people holding hands to wrap around its trunk. It's a humbling, powerful experience. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a calm walk with a rewarding destination.
05 · Nature
Rivers and swimming holes
Cerro Azul is surrounded by crystal-clear rivers. On sunny days, the best move is a dip in one of them — just minutes from the cabin. The water is cool, clear and surrounded by vegetation, ideal for relaxing or bringing a picnic.
06 · Birdwatching
Birdwatching in Cerro Azul
Cerro Azul is one of Panama's best destinations for birdwatching, with over 400 species in the area. You'll spot several right from the cabin balcony: crimson-backed tanagers, green and red-legged honeycreepers, violet-capped hummingbirds, yellow-eared toucanets, trogons and more. For serious birders, there are local expert-led tours.
07 · Wildlife
Capuchin monkeys and other wildlife
Beyond the birds, Cerro Azul is home to white-faced capuchin monkeys (a species endemic to Panama), sloths, iguanas and frogs. It's not unusual for the monkeys to approach the balcony looking for fruit — a close-up encounter with local wildlife you won't find in many tourist destinations.
08 · Sport
Mountain biking
The routes in and around Los Altos de Cerro Azul are ideal for mountain biking, with paths for every experience level. The views from the saddle make every climb worth it.
09 · Club
Hacienda Country Club
Inside the community, the Hacienda Country Club offers golf, tennis, a pool and horseback riding. A good option for days when you'd rather not leave the mountain but still want variety.
10 · Waterfall
Cascada El Vigía — a local favorite
One of the most visited waterfalls in the area, with marked access and prepared trails leading to the pool. A good option for a short visit with no special equipment needed.
11 · Nature
Camping and picnics
Designated areas around Cerro Azul allow camping if you want an extra-adventurous night. And for picnics, the lakes and lookout points have great spots to bring food and spend the day.
12 · Relax
Just disconnecting
And then there's Cerro Azul's best activity: doing absolutely nothing. Reading a book in the hammock, having coffee on the balcony, watching the sunset from the fire pit. This counts too.
